Located in the Scorpius constellation, roug light years from Earth, is the globular cluster known as Messier I am also a proud member of the SAGES group, which studies extragalactic globular cluster systems as a means to understand galaxy formation. Our current focus is the SLUGGS survey. I have broad interests in old stellar populations, including star clusters in the local universe, dwarf galaxies, and mass loss in red giants.

M15, An Ancient Globular Cluster: Novem M18, A Well-Hidden, Young Star Cluster: August 5, M19, The Flattened Fake-out Globular: Aug   Several recent photometric studies of extragalactic globular cluster (GC) systems have discovered a novel feature. The blue, metal-poor population of GCs shows a color–magnitude relation at bright magnitudes: the more luminous GCs are redder.

The first globular cluster discovered was M22 in , but individual stars in a globular cluster were not seen until Charles Messier observed M4. The first eight globular clusters discovered are shown in the table. The M before a number refers to the catalogue of Charles Messier, while NGC is from the New General Catalogue.. Finally a chapter reviews the kinematics of galaxies derived from globular cluster systems and another their role in the context of galaxy formation and evolution studies.

As a whole, the book gives an up-to-date view of the field at the beginning of the new decade, which will without doubt again bring significant progress in our understanding.

Globular clusters are roughly spherical, densely packed groups of stars found around galaxies. Most formed at the same time as their host galaxies.

They therefore provide a unique fossil record of the formation and early evolution of galaxies. This volume presents the first comprehensive review of globular cluster by:   Preface; 1. Introduction; 2. Properties of Extragalactic globular cluster systems book clusters; 3.

The galactic globular cluster system; 4. Globular cluster systems in nearby galaxies; 5. Properties Cited by:   Globular clusters are roughly spherical, densely packed groups of stars found around galaxies. Most globular clusters probably formed at the same time as their host galaxies.

Therefore they provide a unique fossil record of the conditions during the formation and early evolution of galaxies. This volume presents a comprehensive review of globular cluster systems. A globular cluster is a spherical collection of stars that orbits a galactic ar clusters are very tightly bound by gravity, which gives them their spherical shapes, and relatively high stellar densities toward their name of this category of star cluster is derived from the Latin, globulus—a small sphere.

Occasionally, a globular cluster is known simply as a globular. The globular cluster systems of galaxies in the Local Group and slightly beyond are discussed in Chapter 4, whereas more distant extragalactic globular cluster systems are addressed in Chapter 5.

Correlations between the properties of globular cluster systems and properties of their host galaxies are also discussed in Chapter 5. Our project aims at studying the chemistry and determine the ages of globular cluster (sub-)populations. First results indicate that the different galaxies host from little to significant intermediate-age populations, and that the latter have \(\alpha\) -element over iron ratios closer to solar than the old population that show an \(\alpha.

Harris (, “Globular Cluster Systems in Galaxies Beyond the Local Group”) have seen a revolution in the field of extragalactic GCs. It is becoming increas-ingly apparent that GCs provide uniquely powerful diagnostics of fundamental parameters in a wide range of astrophysical processes.

In the last decade, a new kind of stellar systems has been established that shows properties in between those of globular clusters (GCs) and early‐type dwarf galaxies. These so‐called ultra‐compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) have masses in the range 10 6 to 10 8 M⊙ and half‐light radii of 10– by: 5.

In this section, we briefly discuss recent results from kinematical studies of extragalactic globular clusters. The required measurements were discussed in Sect. Kinematics can be used both to understand the formation of the globular cluster systems, as well as to derive dynamics of galaxies at large radii.
